Every thing goes to utilitarianism with the possible exception of architecture. For instance the automobile had it’s hay day in the early to mid 20th century where it was a thing of grander and and luxury but to day it is jut a basic necessity of of life, no more full service filling stations... on the other hand, through the ages, Architecture has oscillated from the utilitarian to granger and back again. In the early days of man and in some third world countries today mud huts were the norm just the bare minimum to keep the elements out. Then came several grand areas of awesome architecture during the height of the roman, Greek and Egyptian then after their collapse thatched roofed mud huts became the norm with the occasional cathedral or palace rising out of their midst. Today I bevel we are on a down down slope of architectural decline. With the peak having occurred in the 1920 and 30’s with the rebirth of the concrete age which had been dead sense the collapse of the roman empire. Grated we are not living in mud huts with thatched roofs but we are living in the modern equivalent. Homes in the early 20th century were tastefully designed and built to last even thoughts of the farming peasantry. Today modern construction is quick cheep and lacks any originality or durability. Case in point the multitude of “cookie cutter” homes build in housing developments which have risen sense the end of the second World War. This utilitarian ism is even present in most modern university buildings which lack much of the decorative facade which is seen near the tops of buildings build prior to ~ 1960 or 70.

Now fro my rant on modern architects:
They have all had frontal lobotomies and taken lessons form the Chines in terms of coming up with designs, that is most everything is a cheep knock off of the original. Take for instance the Columbus Arena district you have the area it’s self which was stilted after the old union station down town. The you have the condos built around on the site of the old Ohio State Penitentiary which have a mighty strong resemblance to the old prison cell blocks which were their before. An additional similarity in design of the site is the road way and side walks in the area are all paved with bricks which may have been inspired by the five acre ornate brick court court for the prison which they tore out for a paved blacktop parking lot (pleas note none of the old paving bricks were reused). The most obvious and egregious knockoff of an original comes from the new park on the river font in witch they tore down the old pump house and built a shelter house on the same spot as the old pump house which is a near replica of the original minus a few walls. At this point you may be asking why I think most all modern architects have had a frontal lobotomy? Because all the new buildings which are supposed to “match” or “complement” the neighborhood DONT! The do just the opposite. Take a look at the Columbus convention center which was supposedly going to “fin in” with the surrounding neighborhood which is a collection of early 20th entry mid rise building does not. For I looks like a pile of cheep pole barn material crudely thrown to gather at odd angles then painted to look like a pile of pastel puke. I could list many other examples such as the new Ohio State architecture building which the one who name it bares, Austen Knolten, wold be rolling over in his grave if he saw it, but I believe I have made my point quite clear that modern architects are in dire need of a rectal cranial extraction.
